Explore Spinalonga
For many decades, the island of Spinalonga was a leper colony serving the whole of Greece. After the last remaining sufferers were relocated to a hospital near Athens, the island maintained an eerie presence. If you had asked a local fisherman to take you there by boat, you would have been greeted with complete silence and serenity.
The breathtaking former Venetian bastion was featured in Victoria’s Hislop’s debut novel, ‘The Island’. The natural charm and beauty were showcased on TV, in the ‘To Nisi’ 26-part dramatization for the Greek Mega channel. The recent claim to fame has undoubtedly boosted tourism, as there are now up to 2,000 visitors a day during high season.
On the island, you have the opportunity to swim in the crystal clear waters of a nearby bay and enjoy a delicious BBQ lunch on the beach.
