PHILERIMOS CHURCH AND THE PALACE OF THE KNIGHTS
Our half-day tour begins with a visit to one of the city’s most famous landmarks, Mount Filerimos, where the Acropolis of the Ancient Ialyssos once stood. Although only the foundations of the Acropolis remain, the location offers incredible views of the Byzantine church of St. George Hostos and the sparkling waters of the stunning Aegean.
Discover the traditional religious sanctuary of the Monastery of Our Lady of Filerimos, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Having been destroyed during the Turkish occupation, and rebuilt by the Italians, the monastery walls are decorated with beautiful Gothic architecture that is unique throughout Greece.
We also explore the hill of Monte Smith, named after the British admiral, Sir William Sidney Smith, upon which the impressive Acropolis of Rhodes has stood for centuries. You will also have the opportunity to admire many fine examples of rare14th-15th century frescoes on show in the Byzantine Church of St. George Hostos.
