TURKISH BATHS
To perfectly round off a visit to the exotic city of Istanbul nothing beats the experience of a traditional Turkish bath. Originally built in 1454 for Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, Çemberlitaş Hanam is one of Istanbul’s oldest bathhouses.
The magnificent historical Hamam is a lavish structure with ornate arches designed in two sections – one for men, the other for women. Large heated marble slabs and glass domes also feature in the fully-restored, cavernous interior.
On arrival at Çemberlitaş Hanam, you will be given a pestemal (traditional towel) and slippers. Traditionally, Turkish baths follow a three-step process; warm-up, wash and massage.
After changing, head to the Sicaklik ‘hot room’ to warm up and work up a sweat on the heated marble platform. When you’re ready for washing, use water in a traditional copper bath bowl and scented soap to cleanse the skin.
One of the attendants will scrub and massage your body in the traditional hanam manner, to stimulate blood circulation and remove dead skin cells. The final step is a relaxing massage.
